3 Tips for Better Selfies

How To Take A Better Selfie!

Let's up your selfie-game by addressing a few common problems with easy solutions:

Problem #1: Distortion

Ever checked out the funny mirrors at the carnival? Notice that your phone selfies have a similar effect? It's due to the fact that your phone uses a wide angle lens. Long story short, it distorts your face, especially when it's really close. Result: Large Nose, Small Head.

Tip #1: Your Selfie Should Look Like You

How to make sure your face doesn't get squished and stretched beyond all recognition? Get that camera further away from your face!
Use a selfie stick if you have one. Or, let the longest-limbed person in the shot take the photo. In this photo, I'm reaching out in front as far as I can, and letting my husband's face get stretched with the distorted edge of the frame instead! (Sorry honey!).

Problem #2: Unflattering Angle

Double-chins, up-the-nose views, really, nothing good comes from taking a selfie at a low angle.

Tip#2: Hold That Camera High, Not Low!

I think most women have figured this one out. Holding your phone at a higher angle eliminates double chins, and we can't see up your nose. Win-win!  Careful not to hold it too high, or you will look like a bobble-head figure.  Just high enough to say bye-bye extra chin(s)!

*Bonus Tip: To really eliminate that extra chin from almost any angle, jut your chin towards the camera like a turtle. From the side, you are going to look like, well, a turtle, but your camera sees in two dimensions. Pushing your chin forward will smooth that double chin right out of existence, as far as the camera is concerned!

Problem #3: Unflattering Light

Lots of grain, dark shadows and lifeless eyes? You are probably in the wrong light.

Tip#3: Get In Good Light!

Whenever it is in your control, try to find good light. What is good light? On most faces, a nice even diffused light is going to look the best. I love indirect window light. Test this out for yourself. Stand facing a large window with indirect or diffused light coming through it. Hold your camera up and slowly turn around. Chances are very good that when you are directly facing that window, you will look the best. Wrinkles disappear, and your eyes will light up with beautiful, big catchlights.

Keep these tips in mind the next time you pull out your phone for a selfie!
